DIY Five Tier Cupcake Stand

Five Tier Cupcake Stand Materials:
  • Good quality wood (ours is Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF))
  • 2" or 3" Abs pipe
  • Threaded hex rod
  • 4 washes and 2 hex rod nut
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • White stain finish spray paint
Tools:
  •  Hack saw
  • Jig saw with finishing blade
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Table saw for straight cutting
  • Drill bit

Instructions:
  1. Measure the round tiers, the tier diameters are 16.25", 13.5", 11.75", 9.25" and 7.75". To get as perfect a round tier as you can use a compass.
      1. If you don't have a compass or your compass can't make large enough circles, use a ruler to measure the radius (half the width of your tier) and drill a hole. This hole should be big enough to fit your hex rod.
      2. Place your hex rod in the hole.
      3. Tie a string around your pencil, the length of the string should be the length of the radius for the tier. Loosely tie the other end of the string to the hex rod and use this as as compass.
  2. Cut the tiers using a jig saw with a finishing blade
  3. Cut the abs pipe into 4" segments using a table saw that is for straight cutting
  4. Stablize the bottom tier. This is extremely important, if your base isn't weighted down your cupcake stand can topple over. Our stand is weighed down with wood blocks, we nailed the bottom tier to the wood blocks. We layered the blocks so our bottom tier is 4" off the ground. We placed the blocks as pictured above so we can easily insert the 18" hex rod.
  5. Spray paint the tiers and pipes, be sure to shake the can well and spray lightly in multiple layers. Let the paint dry in between each coat. Let the paint completely before you assemble the cupcake stand. If you try assembling the stand before the paint dries, the paint might become ruined.
  6. Cut your threated hex rod to about 18" using a hack saw
  7. Assemble the cupcake stand. Place one hex rod nut onto the end the hex rod, a small washer, followed by a larger washer, and then insert this from below the base. What you end up with is shown in Photo A. From there, add a pipe segment and continue as shown in the photos until you've reached your last tier. Secure the stand by screwing on the second hex rod nut, adding a washer before the hex rod nut would help make the stand sturdier but this isn't shown in the photo.
  8. Add your finishing details. We secured white ribbons around the tiers with a hot glue gun. You can simply just stray paint it.
  9. Secure a white cloth around the base of the cupcake stand so the weighs at the bottom won't be visible. We weren't able to do this before our Mother's Day event. We will get around to it eventually :)
