ABSN: First Semester at CSU San Marcos

I started my first semester at  CSU San Marcos'  Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a school that has rolling admissions I was surprised when I received an admission letter a month after I submitted my application. As excited as I was about the acceptance, I was very nervous about the necessary move to Southern California. After some confliction and debate I decided to accept the admission with a back up plan to still apply to CSU Sacramento's ABSN program. I would much rather attend the CSUS program because it is closer to my home and family, and still let me keep my part time job. My second choice school was CSU Northridge, I did apply to the ABSN program and found out this week that I got accepted, but too late.

CSUSM's ABSN requires a semester of prerequisite courses that other ABSN programs usually requires completed prior to beginning the program. It would be much cheaper to take the prerequisite anthropology, philosophy, and nutrition courses at a community college, but alas, that's not the case here.

For those interested here's my timeline:

November-  I submitted the nursing application
December 2nd- I got my admission letter
December 9th- Deadline to accept the admission (the day I submitted my intent to enroll)
December 12th- Applied to CSUSM using CSU Mentor
January 19th- Relocated to Temecula
January 22nd- First day of class

We had a Nursing Orientation on February 28th and was quite overwhelmed by the additional cost of the required nursing health check ups and nursing equipment. Overall it's going to be almost another $1000. I knew nursing school would be expensive, time consuming, and challenging but I had been hoping it was an exaggeration. For now I'm working a 6-8 hour a week babysitting gig and enjoying my free time. Next semester will be the beginning of the actual nursing courses and I'm sure I will be missing this first semester a lot.
